Matt Somers asked:

“You’ve done a bit of that coaching stuff; see if you can pull a bit of a training workshop together for the team”

“There’s not much classroom training going on in the summer, so put yourself about and do some one to one coaching instead”

“I like that coach we hired, see if we can get her to deliver the customer service workshops”

Whilst I won’t pretend that they are direct quotes, these senior management style comments do serve to illustrate the foggy understanding of the differences between training and coaching and suggest some of the difficulties that might be encountered in moving from one discipline to the other. They also suggest that those who commission or purchase training and coaching are unclear of the differences and risk using the wrong tool for the wrong job.

Coaching is not training one to one (”Sitting by Nellie”) and training is not group coaching. While both are ultimately concerned with making people bigger and better at what they do, training is a teacher centred approach best deployed when a performance gap to do with a lack of knowledge or skill has been identified. A good example would be providing training to a salesperson with a poor record of upselling because he has a poor grasp of the finance options or has never been taught the various accessory packages his dealership offers. Coaching on the other hand is a learner centred approach that is best used in addressing performance gaps that are to do with attitude or state of mind. If our salesman knows his product range and sales techniques inside out and backwards more training is not going to help. If he is experiencing fatigue, boredom, stress, lack of focus, etc., coaching is what he needs.

Classroom trainers have always been asked to carry out one to one training when the need arises and that practice still happens. The problem is calling this activity coaching. I was once invited to sit in on some coaching taking place in a contact centre. This consisted of a sales trainer listening in on an adviser’s call and afterwards pointing out the mistakes that had been made and the sales leads that had been missed. The adviser listened dutifully but didn’t learn a lot and was left to raise his performance by “trying harder”. This is not coaching. At best it is feedback, at worst it is destructive criticism.

What if we want our trainers to be coaches too? Trainers know about engaging the learner by asking questions, differing speeds of learning, adult learning styles and so on. The good news is that as coaches they will definitely need to be drawing on their skills in these areas.

The bad news is that a lot of other things they do as a trainer will be counter productive as a coach. The most obvious examples being instructing and telling. In training - particularly technical training - these are vital skills and we use them to pass on information and check that we have been understood. In coaching we’re more concerned with helping learners find their own way forward and are probably best advised to avoid telling and instructing as far as possible. This is because when we tell or instruct we assume responsibility for making the learning happen, we deny our learners the opportunity to think for themselves and we end up simply passing on our recipe which is unlikely to quite as appropriate for our learner anyway.

A wish to help people achieve their own aims is a useful beginning but the best advice for the trainer cum potential coach is to undertake some formal coaching skills training. The options available for doing so are many and various and outside the scope of this article. My recommendation would be to start by articulating exactly what you want your coach training to do for you; as precisely as you can before looking at what the different providers offer.

Wasn’t sure what category this should go under… so it’s under two now…
I’m going to officially propose to my girlfriend/fiancee at her graduation from basic training (Air Force). I was wondering if she would be able to wear the engagement ring for the rest of the weekend and to her tech school. Anyone else proposed at basic and were allowed to wear the ring?
She going to be doing signals intelligence.

Jane Shepherd asked:

A trade association representing the UK’s building maintenance sector has produced a guide to its training courses.

For the first time, The Property Care Association (PCA) – which incorporates the British Wood Preserving and Damp-proofing Association (BWPDA) - has launched a new training prospectus.

The move comes as more and more property professionals seek to enhance their practical knowledge of property care issues.

Representing the damp-proofing, timber preservation, structural maintenance, structural waterproofing and flood remediation industries – the Association has an extensive training programme. It is also recognised for its technical expertise – which includes a specialist panel of experts able to deal with complex enquiries.

Training can often be delivered at clients’ own premises as an alternative to travelling to a designated centre.

Yasmin Chopin, director of the PCA, which has its headquarters in Huntingdon, said: “Our new training prospectus offers a comprehensive insight into the full range of training the Association offers.

“It is not necessary to be a member of the PCA to access all of our courses and our follow up research shows that the training is valued by a range of professionals including architects, construction professionals, surveyors, facilities managers, social housing managers and estate agents.”

The complete PCA Training Prospectus 2009 can be ordered by contacting eleana@property-care.org. Full details of the PCA training programme can also be found at the Association’s website at http://www.property-care.org/training-events

Ends

The Property Care Association (PCA) has been in existence for four years as part of the British Wood Preserving and Damp-proofing Association (BWPDA) but in 2006 officially became an independent association, along with the Wood Protection Association.

PCA contractors are authorised to use the Association’s new logo, and this can be seen in directories such as Yellow Pages, newspapers and other publications for identification to potential customers.

Although a relatively new trade body, the Property Care Association has inherited the stability and professional strengths of the BWPDA and its 75 year history.

This includes the choice of a long-term FSA regulated specialist insurance policy, and a UK-wide list of contractor members who are all carefully vetted before being awarded membership - and are then subject to rigorous auditing procedures once admitted to the Association.

Chris Montgomery asked:

To fill any one of the many Construction Management jobs around, you need to have the right background for it. This means having the right academic credentials for those types of Construction Management jobs, enough years of practical hands-on experience in at least specialty among Construction Management jobs, and even a record for pursuing continual learning opportunities when possible (maybe for an additional special area in Construction Management jobs.) Let us focus first on Construction Managers for our analysis of training for Construction Management jobs.

Construction Management jobs like that of a Construction Manager are two-fold in scope: you must possess the technical knowledge and skills for the job; and you must know how to manage people too. That is where the difficulty in Construction Management jobs comes in –people are flawed and lacking in some departments while exhibiting strength in others. This means the best candidate for the job may be one of the nastiest overseers you have ever met, but man, does he know construction! On the other hand, you might wind up with a candidate who is an all-around good guy (the type of colleague you would readily invite over to your house to meet your family) but who is completely inept and incompetent in technical issues. In a case like this, the better person for the job would be the nasty candidate (though you can always keep in touch with the nicer candidate for leisure pursuits, like joining a weekend bowling club together maybe.)

The technical training you need to be a competent Construction Manager would involve being a college or university graduate of either civil engineering, construction management, or construction science. Here is where some problems at work also start – there are some employees who literally worked their way up from the grungiest lowliest Construction Management jobs in the construction firm and toiled for years just to get to that post. Then, all of a sudden, the top brass go and hire some young yet very smart college graduate and put that new hiree in a higher position than that held by the older employees. Don’t laugh –this is an all-too-common situation in many companies. The older employees who started at rock bottom in the company may resent their new Construction Manager for being a) young, b) smart, c) very competent, and d) now has become their new boss. Filing in vacancies for Construction Management Jobs with employees who are younger than their subordinates has been proven to be a reason to expect problems in the future. It is more of a psychological and social problem though than a technical construction problem.

To resolve this problem, there are employers offering Construction Management jobs who specify a range of the desired age of any candidates, as well as minimum number of years of experience in the same line of work. This helps give the new hiree a leg up when it comes to integrity and perceived competence for the position. (And it also passes the buck for training a new college graduate to a different firm which is wiling to absorb the risks that come with hiring inexperienced college graduates for Construction Management Jobs.)

Is experience the best teacher for Construction Management Jobs then? Not necessarily – there are things about Construction Management Jobs you can learn by theory that you will never learn through experience. The best learning process though is one that can harness both formal education and experience together to give the organization the best possible Construction Manager they can get at that time.

Lina Smith asked:

Sales training and sales programs can benefit even the natural born seller. Advanced sales training and sales programs get down and dirty into the specific skills that manifest excellence in sales management. Effective management releases more time for developing new sales.

Sales courses from professional sales training and sales programs will provide you with the educational certification you need to advance your sales career from a sales team member to a sales manager. Sales training and sales programs will also give you the edge you need to excel within a corporate sales team. Whether you are looking to move up the career ladder in a big corporation, or get a grasp on sales management for your own small personal business, a sales course from a sales training program that offers concrete skills in sales management will move your reputation from being the best on your sales force to being an example of skilled excellence.

Excellence carries with it knowledge, prestige and success. Furthering your career by developing skills in the more technical and precise aspects of selling through sales training and sale programs gives you the background for achieving excellence.

There exists extensive technological applications that can assist the sales person in creating and developing sales leads, maintaining sales leads, and following up on sales leads – but without a knowledge of today’s business conditions and modern sales techniques – sales technology will do little to move the natural born seller to sales management excellence.

Excellence in sales skills requires technical skills – even for the natural born salesperson. Client relationships must be managed, time management skills must be refined for productivity and efficiency, sales facts and figures must be accounted for and analyzed, and customer resource management should be understood. If you need to develop these skills and other technical sales skills to advance your career, a sales course from sales programs and sales training will provide you with the education and training you need to develop and refine your sales management skills. Sales courses for certification can easily get your sales career on the fast track to sales management.

Sales courses from sales programs and sales training will also keep you up to date with the fast-changing nature of business development and sales transactions. Appropriate sales training and sales programs and courses for certification can also shift your career from individual sales to B2B sales. Sales training and sales programs that deliver tricks, techniques and technicalities on the most intricate elements of sales development will produce a sales manager that exemplifies and demands excellence from the sales team - and especially demand excellence from him or herself.

Sales training and sales courses are the solution for career advancement and personal development for the sales professional. Even natural born sales persons need to keep up with the future. This is done with advanced sales training by taking sales courses for lifetime continuing education. The salesperson must stay ahead of the prospective customer. A sales personality is a driver – but mastering the skills it takes to manage the fruits of that personality can turn a natural born seller into a supernatural sales manager.

Noel asked:

My husband is enlisted in the National Guard. Before he left for basic, he told me, his family, and all his friends that he will not be writing or calling us during his entire stay at basic and technical training because it would make it harder for him to hear our voices or talk to us about things from home. However, he did tell us he wanted us to write him to give words of encouragement and advice. He told me to call the bases he will be stationed at to get his address for everyone so he won’t have to call.

Here’s the thing: YES you can call a base and get someone’s address. It is not classified information. The US Air Force website says that you should call the Basic Military Reception Center to get a trainee’s address if you have not received a phone call. All you need is his name, and they’ll read it to you line for line. My husband was also told this by a sergent at drill. Anyone who wants to tell me that I can’t get his information or that they aren’t so supposed to give it out is WRONG.

Anyway, he forgot to tell us the base he’ll be stationed at during tech school. I know him, and no matter what he will not call us even if he doesn’t receive any letters from us. It’s just the way he is. He’s too determined not to be reminded of home or hear our voices. His parents and I are worried that he’ll not realize we can’t get in contact with him and feel forgotten by us. So I’m asking:

Since I could call the Basic Military Training Reception Center and get his address, could I do that when he is at tech school? We do not know the actual word for what his individual training will be, but we do know that he’ll be loading cargo planes. Could you tell me what this is if you can? Thanks.

P.S. I’m giving all this extra information because when I last posted this question everyone who answered wanted to tell me his dumping me or that I’m not supposed to be able to get his address - it’s “classified”. This is a great, ignorant assumption and I ask that no one do it here. Just answer the question please. Thanks =]
Okay, LOOK. For anyone who wants to repost their stupidity on this question too:

I reposting this not to hear the answer I want but to hear any answer at all! All you’ve given me is an arrogant statement that you know what’s up with my husband.

YOU DO NOT KNOW MY HUSBAND. His has severe anxiety problems, and something like basic training IS like war for him. He didn’t decide that he didn’t want to write or call us until he went to pre-basic and saw how hard it would be for him. Calling or writing home will make him more homesick - it’s just the way he is. He will not call even if he wants to. Can’t you realize that you do not know him or his situation and accept that I know what the heck I’m talking about?

Call me a stalker, I don’t care. I guess his mom, his dad, his brothers and sisters, and all five of his friends are stalkers too since they told me to go in this website to find out how to contact him?
First I called him my boyfriend because we don’t want a few people to know we’re married and they know me on here…but I had to add that we were married to get it through your skulls that this isn’t a silly break-up.
Okay I almost completely forgot, James J. Seeing as how you’re an airman can you tell me how many people can come to a basic training graduation? There’s about fifteen people who want to fly out there. His parents and I are getting saving our money to drive together to San Antonio. Is there a limit on the number of people who can come?
